3 Keys to Personal Power

2017 is now well underway. Goals and resolutions have been declared. Now the real work begins. To accomplish our goals, we must utilize our personal power.

We must call upon that inner strength that we’ve all been given, and keep our eyes on the prize. Here are three tips that I think will help in building the personal power we need to achieve our goals.

1. Take Full Responsibility:

The foundation of personal power is accepting responsibility for your life. Each of us is responsible for the decisions we make and the consequences of those decisions. This is where personal power begins. Blaming anyone or anything else for where we are in life is to assume the role of victim. Victims are powerless. Rather than acting, they are acted upon. This is not where you want to be. Taking responsibility for our choices – be they successes or failures, and for every decision made going forward – is where personal power begins.

2. Focus on What You Can Control:

Another facet of personal power is to waste no time or energy on things we cannot control. We cannot control what others think of us, but we can control what we think of ourselves. We can control our attitudes, what we value, who we associate with, how we will approach life and respond to adversity. Being aware of, and acting on only what you can control, is another important factor of personal power.

3. Use Your Energy Wisely:

Energy is better spent working on what you’re for rather than against. There is a different kind of feeling when we’re working on building, starting, or creating something than when we’re fighting against something. If there is something that you’re against, think of the alternative that you would like to see and spend your energy on making that happen. Gandhi encouraged us to be the change that we would like to see. I liken this to working on what you’re for. This is what personal power is all about.

I have found these three processes most helpful in my life. I hope you find them helpful as well. If you have a set of principles that help you exercise your personal power, I would love for you to share them with your comments. Maybe they will be of help to others as well. Have a wonderful 2017.
